Moving Right Along!

No, no - still no job, but I am moving! I am very excited as my new roomie will be a friend from graduate school (she blogs about dating in DC - check it out here). And my move isn't that far, although it feels that way to me. I'll be out in Virginia, so I'm saying goodbye for now to Maryland.

Lots of packing is involved, but as this is a "controlled" move and doesn't have to be done as stealth mode, I'm taking the opportunity to really go through things and decide what I want to take with me. Moving and have extra stuff? Here's a few ideas to help you make money to move:

Besides giving your used clothing to Goodwill or other charities (which is always a good idea, as there is always someone out there who could use a helping hand even more than you and me!) consider dividing out the really nice stuff that you just don't wear, don't fit into, or just don't like and go down to a second hand clothing shop. There are quite a few around. Most won't buy what's not in season, but even if you get $10 -$15 it can lighten your load - and hey! That's a movie night right there - for stuff you were going to give away anyway!

Books you've read and don't want to move and read again? Used book shops! They are a little scarce around DC, but there are a few.

Craigslist! One of my favorite Internet features - have extra furniture? Don't even feel like moving it? Put it up on there and have someone else run off with that table and chair set you don't know what to do with!

If you are fortunate enough to have a yard, you can always have a yard sale . . .

As for boxes, don't bother going out and buying any - head down to your local beer and wine store and ask them if you can pilfer from the back. But wait! I'm shipping stuff? What now? Turn that frown upside down - or rather that box inside out! You can't mail boxes with alcohol products on the outside, so in this case just think inside the box.

At this point in life, I am an expert mover - I love the idea of staying in one place, but it has yet to happen. What do you all think? What are some other good tips for getting rid of stuff and moving?

  1. Having moved 13 times from 01'-09' I finally took all my DVD's that are not in a special box and put them into a cd sleeve case. As I have over 200 DVD's it got to be really annoying boxing them up all the time. My rule of thumb if you haven't looked at it in a year not worth moving for another year to be not looked at so get rid of it. Always watch A&E's Hoarders it makes you clear out stuff even more.
